Here
is our media release for our Perth Show,15/08/01:
"Atomic
Oz" Explosion in Perth
A local
group of young community-based performers are taking the musical
Atomic Oz on a three-month national tour. The opening performance
of the tour will be exploding in Perth on Saturday 25th August at
2pm at the Perth Cultural Centre (outside PICA). The satirical show
is an expose of Australia’s involvement in the global nuclear
industry from the British nuclear tests in 1949 to the present Star
performers in the show include Future Generations Dude (aka Ben
Coyne) and the infamous Radioactive Man (aka Olly Watkins).
The
inspiring group leaves Perth on the 2nd of September and will be
performing in the lead up to this years federal election. The tour
will visit Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Canberra appearing
at festivals, university and school campuses, and prominent public
places. The troupe will also tour the amazing documentary “Fight
for Country” (Rockhopper Productions) – the story of Jabiluka,
which has recently had its worldwide premiere.
Paul
Hood, of Shenton Park, tour co-organiser and performer, said “The
government supports the genocidal nuclear industry in Australia,
so it is up to our community to stop this madness. Nuclear issues
have not been prominent despite strong community opposition to uranium
mining and nuclear waste dumps. In fact, the politicians are ignoring
popular opinion, pushing ahead with more mines, maintaining our
heavy involvement in the US National Missile Defence System and
recently commissioning a new nuclear reactor.”
He
continued: “Only participatory democracy will end the political
hypocrisy and this play will inspire and ignite community action,
making the nuclear issue prominent in electorates across the country”
This
massive organisational task has been undertaken on a short timeframe
and has only been made possible with amazing contacts across the
country that we have made from cross continental journeys with Cycling
For Sustainability and to the Global Greens, Students for Sustainability
and Independent Media conferences.
Community
members nationwide have sponsored this project, and the troupe has
put on fundraiser gigs and film nights. Shares in a nuclear free
future are also available for purchase ($10 with amazing guaranteed
returns!) to help fund the tour.
Updates
from each performance location will be available during the tour
